The Skin-Plumping Smoothie

Hi Guys!
This morning I shot a Stylefile segment for Good Day LA. They wanted a smoothie of sorts, so I created this recipe right before shooting (as in half an hour before :) ). Sylefile segments are not live, so there were plenty of cutaway shots, holding the ingredients in my hands a few times, pouring and repouring ingredients, etc.

It is great to have this time of year, since all our skin is a bit dried out from the harsh winter climate. Even here in LA, that does NOT get snow, the climate is really dry right now.

This smoothie is quite yummy. Check it out!

½ frozen Acai smoothie packet: I like the Sambazon brand. Found frozen in the freezer section of health stores like Wholefoods. Loaded with antioxidants and Omega fatty acids that plump and nourish the skin, as well as fiber.

1 ½ cups of coconut water: Our skin can’t be plumped up if it is not hydrated! Coconut water is one of the best hydrators because it has the same electrolyte balance as human blood. Some countries even use it for plasma transfusions. It is also full of potassium, which facilitates cellular cleansing.

½ cup of unsweetened almond milk: Adds a nice creamy texture to the smoothie.

½ avocado:
Raw beauty fat that digests easily, and is full of beauty minerals and fiber.

1 tsp. coconut oil/butter: Medium chain fatty acids that are easily metabolized by the liver and also nourish our skin. Contains a high content of Lauric Acid, which can help us burn stored body fat.

Hope you enjoy!! Also, I’ve been really slammed in LA, and practically every second of my schedule has been accounted (and pulled) for. I apologize for the delay in answering comments and emails, but thanks for the patience and I will get back to you soon! :)

See you back here soon.
Love, Kimberly

I love this! I have been in the mood for something sweet (maybe low sodium intake?) and this sounds like it will hit the spot =)

    • kimberlysnyder February 16, 2010 at 12:36 am #

Yes, this is sweet and can be substituted for a breakfast or lunch, since it is really filling! Love. :)

    Kim-
I heard that agave was not really good for you. Would you recommend stevia instead?

    Thx.
    Maria

    • kimberlysnyder February 16, 2010 at 12:35 am #

Hi Maria, Yes, agave should not be used. You can use Stevia, and I’ve definitely started replacing it in more of my recipes. :) xx Kimberly

        Hi Kimberly,
I have had your book for two weeks now! My daughter and I love it ! She has mild acne so we are on a mission to clear it up( were from L.A. so you can never be to healthy or too naturally beautiful) inside and out, My ? is what is this about agave being bad/ I have been using it in my smoothies and chia cereal. Should I stick with stevia?

Much love for all of your hard work that is obviously a labor of love.
        God bless,
        D.D.

Hey Kim! I hope you can post the segment when it airs! :) Smoothie looks great! XO

Sounds delish. It’s really, really dry here too–as in I have a humidifier and so on and my skin’s still just about cracking (I put Manuka Honey on my lips and that helps, but I’m not about to coat my body with it and go off to work). I must try this smoothie! Two questions though: I have unsweetend hemp milk. Can I use that instead of the almond? And I’ve tried to put coconut oil in smoothies before, but it seems like, even in a high-powered blender, it clumps up when there’s cold stuff in there (like the frozen acai). Any tips on keeping the oil liquid-y?
Thanks again, Kimberly! And happy birthday (late)!!

    • kimberlysnyder February 16, 2010 at 12:34 am #

Hey Morgan! I keep it near the stovetop, where it can stay warm and more liquid. You also wrap it in a little towel, like a blankie! And store. Yes on the hemp milk. :)
Thanks for the belated wishes!! xx Kimberly

    Dear Kimberly,

I have been attending your yoga class periodically for about the past two years since I have moved to NYC from Boston. Your class has been a place for me to 1) recover my center/re-establish a connection to myself 2) remind myself to stay humble and 3) to create a safe place for me to grow strength.

In such a great big city where it’s easy to feel misguided by other people’s agendas, your class reminds me to honor the true (growing) yogi within me and to always remain receptive to what the practice will bring to my consciousness, my spirit and ultimately to my path. Thank you for sharing your journey with so many individuals without pretension or judgment.

    Om Shanti-

    Debra

      Hi Debra,
Wow, thank you so much for your beautiful message. I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me that, it means so much to me. I’m just the channel, not the doer. :)
Love and Shanti!!! Hope to see you in class soon!

Kim, I’m sipping this right now. It’s fantastic. I added in a bit of banana too. It’s actually very similar to a coconut-acai concoction from a local smoothie bar. I loved that smoothie so much that I reverse-engineered at their recipe at home. But I like yours even better–the addition of the avocado makes it soooo creamy.

    • kimberlysnyder February 15, 2010 at 11:20 pm #

Great! I love avocado in smoothies. :) Great and filling.

  8. Heidi February 14, 2010 at 5:05 am #

    Hey Kim!

I’d like to know what omega 3 supplement do you recommend (the one with DHA and EPA)? I wouldn’t like to use fish oils and have been using this vegan supplement made of organically grown algae. I am not sure about the product’s fillings: http://www.v-pure.com/ and would like it to be as natural and pure as possible. Thanks!

    • kimberlysnyder February 15, 2010 at 11:16 pm #

Hi Heidi, why don’t you just have some ground flaxseed? xx Kimberly

  9. nancy February 14, 2010 at 10:30 pm #

Do you take the chlorella tablets if you do not have time to eat during the day? are they a meal replacement?
Does the roobios tea count as a water?

    • kimberlysnyder February 15, 2010 at 11:13 pm #

Hi Nancy, I wouldn’t really call them as a meal replacement, but rather as something that tides me over until I can eat properly. Yes, you can count roobios, or any kind of herbal tea as water, but still have lots of fresh water! xx Kimberly

Love your video’s, especially your video, “A Peek into Kimberly’s Fridge,” lol. Friendly suggestion, you should get a facebook, or at least set up a website there where we could follow your idea’s, tips etc. and put them into action! Keep the recipes coming! Take care!

I didn’t know that coconut water is used for plasma transfusions in some countries. That’s so interesting. In what countries is this done?

  12. Cammila February 16, 2010 at 5:09 pm #

Hi Kimberly, I’ve been meaning to comment more simply because I’ve come to really enjoy and trust your blog over the past several months. You’ve had a wonderful impact on my inspiration to live more healthfully and detoxified. So thank you!

And more to the point: holy crap, this smoothie REALLY works! I couldn’t believe how noticeably dewy and radiant I became IMMEDIATELY after drinking it! I even made it again two days later just to test that it was really the smoothie that had such a visible effect, and it worked again just like magic! Thanks again! :)

  13. Stephanie February 17, 2010 at 12:25 pm #

    Hi Kimberly,

I went to purchase the Acai frozen packets at Whole Foods last night, but did not end up buying it because it contains soy. I believe it was soy lechtin. Are you aware of that? Also almond milk also contains soy lechtin. Do you eat soy lechtin and just stay away from other types of soy?

    Thanks,

    Stephanie

  14. Shirley February 19, 2010 at 11:35 pm #

I made this wonderful smoothie a couple days ago. love it and will make it for my friends who don’t do green smoothies . I have to say that i have also been bringing my green smoothies to work every day . I get a lot of comments . one of my coworkers has made a pate recipe and wants to make smoothies now. thank you for all the time and effort you put in your blog.

I am new to the world of green smoothies and raw food diets and happened upon your site while getting caught up in my search for valid information. Although I eat reasonably well I still have digestive problems (gas, bloating, etc) which prompted me to buy a Vitamix today. I am still very confused though and wanted to ask your opinion:
-A juicer vs a blender for a beginner?
-Should I always chew my way through a blended drink to incorporate those enzymes?
-I understand juicing is easier for the system to process, but what about all of the nutrients that goes into the trash with the pulp? From what I have read so far you like the Vitamix and the Smoothies. Do you juice as well?
    -One confused grasshopper.

    • kimberlysnyder February 28, 2010 at 1:20 pm #

      Hi Bay!
I do juice also. I recommend blending and the Green Smoothie for beginners, as it has the fiber and doesn’t hit the system in such a strong way. Some of my clients prefer it for the long time and it does better for them than the Green Juice.Yes, chewing both is absolutely crucial to be sure it digests well!!

  16. Kathryn February 23, 2010 at 9:53 am #

    Hey there-
Having my first green smoothie today! Spinach, romaine, celery, turmeric, orange, lime, apple, water. I had no idea how overpowering the celery taste would be- not that it’s bad, I just don’t tend to think much of celery regularly. Should the smoothie be really thick? I feel like that’s the only thing I have to adjust to. In my head I have an idea of a smoothie being “smooth”-er.

Also, I was curious- since you eat primarily a raw and organic diet, where do you get protein? What sort of things do you eat for protein?

Thanks for posting several different recipes here. It gave me some room to play around in the kitchen last night. I do think, however, you may have a larger blender than I do! :)

    • kimberlysnyder February 25, 2010 at 11:55 am #

      Hi Kathryn,
The protein notion is so poorly understood. Calorie for calorie, there is about twice the amount of protein in greens that steak. Yes it is true! Sure you would have to eat more, but 100 calories of broccoli has about 11.6 grams of protein compared to 100 calories of steak, which has about 5.4 grams.
The USABLE amino acids in greens are of a higher quality in greens than animal products- where the amino acids are denatured and largely unusable. Remember- our bodies have to use amino acids to construct specific protein chains that our bodies can use. So we need to look at the quality of amino acids, and how readily they are available for our use. Amino acids in greens are much easier to assimilate than animal products, and require far less energy and do NOT let of toxic, acidic bi-products of digestion (uric acid, ammonia, etc.). If you eat a wide range of plant foods, you will not be protein deficient!!
      xx Kimberly

  17. Nancy February 28, 2010 at 1:54 pm #

How do you feel about adding protein powder to the Green Smoothie to make it more of a meal?

  18. claire February 28, 2010 at 9:42 pm #

Just made this smoothie tonight for the first time – absolutely delish! Thanks for the recipe!

  19. claire March 22, 2010 at 11:10 pm #

Hey Kimberly! I have to write again to tell you how much I love the skin plumping smoothie! Also wanted to let you know that I can’t always find the acai packets, so sometimes I substitute raspberries and blueberries, or I even make a chocolate skin plumping smoothie by using raw cacao nibs instead! Both are extremely yummy! Thanks so much!

  20. Samantha March 30, 2010 at 9:04 am #

    Hi Kimberly!

Absolutely love your blogs–Thanks for the great smoothie recipe. Delicious…and what a great way to get all sorts of good stuff in your body :) My question: how often would you recommend drinking these? Just curious if there is a general limit. Thanks so much!!!

    • kimberlysnyder March 30, 2010 at 11:18 pm #

      Hi love!
Well the green smoothie is a daily drink, and how often you drink this one depends on the rest of your diet. If you have a lighter lunch, this could be great afterwards, or you could even have this as a lunch replacement in the summer sometimes, if it is hot and you aren’t that hungry. I say 3 times a week is a good general number.
      xx Kimberly

What have I done without coconut water all these years? Absolutely DELICIOUS on its own and fabulous in this smoothie. Thanks for making us aware of these wonderful new foods to try.

    Hi Kimberly!

    You’re gorgeous!

I want to make this tomorrow for breakfast and was just wondering how many servings it makes? I’m really worried about the calories!

    Thank you lovely!
    xo. C

    • kimberlysnyder May 25, 2010 at 10:28 pm #

      HI C!
      Thank you!
Don’t make this for breakfast. Make the Green Smoothie for breakfast. You can have this later on in the day as a little snack…. It makes 1-2 servings, and could be a light lunch even. When we are eating easily digestible plant foods and lots of greens, you really don’t need to count calories! I haven’t in years and years. ;)
      Lots of love, Kimberly

      • Bay Martin May 26, 2010 at 1:20 am #

Speaking of trying to look our best, my skin is blinding white and I would like to try a sunless tanner. The only natural product I have found is soy based and I’ve been told that soy really isn’t an ideal product for us in any form(not sure why, but I remember reading that). Any suggestions?

  23. Melanie June 24, 2010 at 1:53 am #

Kim!!! Thanks so much for this awesome smoothie! My baby girl who will be turning 2 in a month gets most of her nutrients through smoothies that I make at home since she is a very picky eater. So far she loves your watermelon smoothie and this skin plumping smoothie. Tried to giver her the green smoothie but that didn’t work so well:) hehe! Is there some type of smoothie that you can think of that she would like that incorporates more greens other than the greens smoothie that she could possibly like?

    Hi Kimberly,

    Thanks for the blog.

I would just like to introduce you to a new vegan approved EPA & DHA omega 3 formula we launched in UK, called Opti3.

We already have US consumers buying from the UK and we would love to launch over in USA, would you like to work with us on that?

    Thanks,

    Mark

I can not eat coconut, what can I use instead of the coconut milk and butter?

  26. Ann Marie May 3, 2011 at 2:23 am #

    Hi Kimberly,
I just wanted to say I am loving your book and this blog. I have a question regarding durian? I would like to know when is the best time to eat? How often should you eat? Last but not least do you have any tips for storing it after itbis bought fresh and opened? Oh yeah what is considered a normal serving? Oh wait one really finally question do you eat by itself or mix with other foods?
I purchased my first durian yesterday and it is a bit overwhelming!
Thank you and keep up the wonderful message younger spreading!
    Ann Marie

    • kimberlysnyder May 4, 2011 at 2:36 am #

HI Ann Marie! You definitely don’t want to store durian for too long (a day max)- otherwise I would freeze it. It will stink up your fridge, kitchen, and possibly your whole house! Treat it like a fatty fruit, such as a coconut or avocado. In other words, the amount you eat and how often you eat it depends on the rest of what’s in your diet for that day. I usually eat it once a week in NY, and that counts as my lunch. I eat probably 3 of those big nubs. I eat it totally alone, as it has enough denseness on its own. Again freezing is a great option as you do have to cut it all up at once!
Let me know how you do. :)

      • Ann Marie May 4, 2011 at 1:25 pm #

        Thanks Kimberly,
I froze the remainder of the durian and I will have it for lunch on the week-end. Thank you for explaining it to me. I will let you know.
        Ann Marie:)

  27. Mel October 21, 2011 at 2:30 pm #

    Hi Kimberly!

I recently began the program after reading your book three weeks ago. I am already seeing great results in my skin and I just had a check up for thyroid issues, the Doctor says to keep it up :) !

This was a great transition recipe for me becuase I make popsicles with this smoothie to help me stay away from ice cream after dinner. Is this a good idea? I usually make about 4 or 5 of them, so they are in the freezer for 5 days or so, just want to make sure that is ok.

    Thank you!!

    Mel

    • Kimberly Snyder October 25, 2011 at 12:09 pm #

Hi Mel, that is absolutely brilliant and fantastic! I love it!! Keep it up. xx

  28. mel October 21, 2011 at 3:27 pm #

Also, im not sure if its a good idea to have this only an hour or 2 after dinner?

    • Kimberly Snyder October 25, 2011 at 12:08 pm #

You can have it then, sure.

      • Irma December 21, 2011 at 5:31 pm #

Hello Kim, I read your book and been reading your blog daily and I must say you are an inspirational beautiful soul. I’m on Blossoming Beauty stage and have a serious Candida issue, I’m still struggling with staying away from sugar, it’s harder than I thought. Any suggestions for me would be greatly appreciated.
Btw, could a Blossoming Beauty make this smoothie since coconut water has sugar, I wasn’t sure.

        Thank you :)

    Hi Kim,
A few days ago I was introduced to your website, and to be honest I’m crazy about it!! I do have some questions for you though. I live in Glenburn, ND it’s town of 400 people. I’m 30 away from the closest largest city (30,000) We do not carry such items in grocery stores. They don’t sell young coconut, acai . .nothing like that. We don’t have whole food stores here. The closest we get to organic are from farmers market and because it snows here 9/12 months the produce is limited. I found Chia seeds, but at GNC, that’s the closest I’ve come to for any unique items I’ve seen you post. What are your recommendations? I’m not financially able to spend a lot of money on such products either.

Also, I teach six Zumba classes a week, do I need to add more into my diet? I’ve plateaued and I’m not thrilled about that. I work at 10 N. Main, it’s a restaurant in Minot, ND Josh Duhamal actually owns it with two other men and I guess him and Fergie swear by the Vitamix also, I’d love one too . .but yet again financially. Is this diet good for my family too? My husband has five eye diseases, do you think this will help him? I’m sorry I have so many questions but I’m super excited about this. If you’ve got any pointers for me please let me know!! Thank you
